The Indian sports tech startup, Game Theory has secured a strategic investment from a powerhouse group of athletes, including badminton legend Pullela Gopichand, squash star Saurav Ghosal, and table tennis champion, Sharath Kamal.

This “Masters” funding round follows a successful $2 million raise in October 2023, solidifying Game Theory’s position as a major player in transforming sports training.

Gopichand, a former top-ranked badminton player, emphasized the importance of a strong grassroots program to create a large talent pool for the future. He said, “Our country has seen significant growth in badminton over the last few years, with aspirations from across all economic strata to participate in the sport. By investing in this venture, I hope to contribute to building a robust sports ecosystem that nurtures talent from the grassroots level. With Game Theory’s technology, we’ll not only be able to deliver a great programme but also scout future talents, helping us win in the sport on a global scale. We can now create a structured and highly personalised pathway that guides young athletes to excel globally, particularly at the Olympics.”

Saurav Ghosal, reflecting on the collaboration, said, “By focusing on long-term athlete development and utilising state-of-the-art technology, we can ensure our athletes are skilled, resilient, and ready to compete at the highest levels.”

Sharath Kamal, a Khel Ratna awardee and a 10-time senior national champion, echoed the sentiment, stating, “The collaboration will ensure a systematic approach to grassroots development and allow more easy adoption of innovative training methods, which is the need of the hour.”

Game Theory’s user-friendly mobile app is designed to fundamentally change how athletes train, compete, and improve. The platform leverages cutting-edge computer vision technology to provide athletes with in-depth performance analysis and customized coaching plans. This fresh infusion of capital from renowned athletes will fuel Game Theory’s mission to create a comprehensive sports ecosystem that nurtures talent from the grassroots up. Ultimately, the startup aims to equip athletes with the tools and guidance they need to succeed on the international stage.

By merging innovative technology with the invaluable insights of these sporting icons, Game Theory is poised to redefine the landscape of sports training and development in India. Founded in 2019 by Sudeep Kulkarni, the company’s user-friendly app fosters a vibrant ecosystem where athletes can connect with others, find compatible playing partners, and enjoy gamified training experiences. Additionally, Game Theory utilizes computer vision data to track progress, generate detailed performance metrics, and offer personalized coaching – all within a single, convenient platform.

In a strategic move to further enhance its technological capabilities, Game Theory acquired sports analytics startup Matchday.ai in November 2023. This acquisition grants them access to a cutting-edge tech stack employing computer vision and AI – tools already used by professional athletes.
