FSDL reallocates Hero ISL prize money; league winners to receive INR 3.5 Cr

It is important to note that the total prize money pool for ISL 2021-22 remains the same of INR 15.5 Crore.

Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) has announced an increase in the prize money for Hero Indian Super League (ISL) ‘Shield Winners’ by INR 3 Crore starting from the 2021-22 season.

The League Winners Shield was introduced in the 2019-20 season under which the table-toppers at the end of the league were presented with the ISL Shield and with a cash reward of INR 50 lakh.

With the announcement, the league winners from the coming season will be winning a total of INR 3.5 Crore as a cash reward. The decision was taken in order to bring an equivalence in the prize money distribution across the five cash prize categories.

The league winners of ISL will also stand a chance to represent India in Asia’s marquee club football competition – the AFC Champions League.

Even after the funds have been reallocated between the different prize categories, the total prize money pool for ISL 2021-22 remains the same of INR 15.5 Crore.

Following the reallocation, the Hero ISL Champions i.e., the winner of the final will now be offered INR 6 crore (previously INR 8 Cr), the runners-up will end up getting INR 3 Crore (previously INR 4 Cr). The teams who finish third and fourth in the points table will continue to receive INR 1.5 Crore each.

As per these reallocations, the club winning the league shield will have three scenarios that they can achieve further:

  • As an added incentive, if the club goes on to win the ISL Championship, they would get a total windfall of INR 9.5 Crore.
  • If the team loses in the final and concludes the season as runner-up, the club would receive a total of INR 6.5 Crore
  • If the table topper finishes third or fourth in the knock out stages, the club would earn a minimum of INR 5 Crore.

The first match of ISL Season 8 will be contested between ATK Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters on November 19.
