The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Formula E have signed a transformative 10-year extension that guarantees the future of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship until at least 2048.
Announced ahead of the 2025 London E-Prix season finale, the new agreement solidifies Formula E’s status as the world’s only FIA-sanctioned all-electric single-seater racing series. It also underscores the shared commitment of both parties to sustainability, innovation, and the future of clean-energy mobility through motorsport.
This renewed deal builds upon the existing 15-year agreement that was previously set to expire in 2038. Importantly, the updated terms include an option to further extend the partnership by an additional five years, potentially keeping the championship under FIA governance through 2053 or 2054. The agreement is being celebrated as a significant milestone in motorsport history, reflecting the growing influence of electric racing on both the sporting and commercial landscape.
Commenting on the occasion, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President at the FIA, said, “The extension of the agreement governing the FIA Formula E World Championship is a fantastic outcome for the sport and a clear reflection of our ongoing strategy at the FIA to foster long-term stability, innovation, and growth across all areas of motorsport.
“This milestone reaffirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and technological progress, which are all central to the Championship’s unique identity and purpose. It also aligns with our broader goal of increasing global participation and driving more accessible motorsport for all. We are delighted to be continuing this journey with Formula E, and I look forward to seeing it grow even further, both on and off the track, in the years to come.”
Craig Edmondson, Chief Commercial Officer at the FIA, added, “Formula E has not only demonstrated impressive growth since its inception, but has also led the way on sustainable innovation in our industry. This is a landmark agreement for the FIA and Formula E, and we are excited to be working with the Championship in the years to come.”
Jeff Dodds, CEO at Formula E, continued, “Formula E’s growth since its inception has been nothing short of extraordinary, with hundreds of millions of fans and world-class teams and drivers deciding to choose highly competitive electric racing. This long-term extension of the partnership enables us to continue building the brand, investing in the product and delivering some of the most captivating racing that has made us famous. With this long-term extension, the opportunity that Formula E now has to impact world motorsport will be truly transformational.”
The extension was also endorsed by Mike Fries, CEO at Liberty Global, who concluded, “We’ve believed in Formula E since day one, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it’s headed. This is the motorsport of the future – a championship that combines the very latest technology, close-combat racing, and a mission that really matters.
“With the FIA’s continued backing, we can now take the next big steps – scaling the sport, growing its global fanbase, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve. With this new agreement in place, Formula E is now positioned better than ever to define the future of motorsport – more innovative, more inclusive, more sustainable – and to inspire the next generation of fans, drivers, and partners around the world.”
The 2024-25 season has showcased the series’s relentless focus on innovation, highlighted by the debut of the Gen3 Evo car. Capable of accelerating from zero to sixty miles per hour in just 1.82 seconds, faster than current Formula 1 cars, the new generation of race vehicles represents the pinnacle of electric racing engineering. With a 17-race calendar spanning iconic global cities, Formula E continues to build its identity around high-intensity street circuits and dynamic urban backdrops.
As Season 12 nears its conclusion, the championship remains wide open, with several drivers and teams still in contention for the title. The series continues to attract global attention, bolstered by a robust ecosystem of manufacturer-backed teams including Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis, Mahindra, and Lola-Yamaha. These partnerships are central to Formula E’s growth strategy, blending elite competition with technical collaboration to advance electric vehicle development.
Since hosting its first-ever race in Beijing more than a decade ago, Formula E has emerged as a global motorsport success story. It now boasts a fanbase of over 400 million people worldwide, with steady annual growth of around 20%. The championship is broadcast to nearly half a billion viewers and features 11 teams and 22 elite drivers competing in locations such as Monaco, Tokyo, London, Shanghai, and Miami. These city-centre races offer fans a compelling blend of entertainment and purpose, firmly positioning Formula E as a sport built for a new generation.
With this historic extension in place, Formula E is not only securing its future—it is redefining what the future of motorsport looks like: more sustainable, more inclusive, and more technologically advanced than ever before.
