FC Barcelona sign Sergio Aguero on a two-year contract

Argentina international Sergio Aguero has agreed to sign for Barcelona on a two-year contract as per numerous Catalan and European media outlets. The 33-year-old striker will move to Spain after his deal with Manchester City deal expires at the end of the season. As per transfer expert and Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Aguero decided to take a pay cut to join the Spanish club.

The veteran striker was reportedly earning £13.9m per year, which equates to nearly £250,000 per week at Manchester City. He was the third-highest earner at Man City behind Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling. Aguero will reportedly earn less than €10 million at Barcelona. However, there is a special clause added to his contract, he will receive a bonus if the team wins the Champions League.

Aguero’s playing time at Man City has reduced significantly this season due to various injuries. However, he will go down as one of the best strikers in the Premier League era. He has won five Premier League titles with Man City and has scored 258 goals for the English club. He scored a memorable goal against QPR in the dying minutes of the final league game match in 2012 to win Man City’s first Premier League title. Barcelona was looking for a number nine ever since Luis Suarez’s departure to Atletico Madrid last summer.

This will be Aguero’s second spell in Spain. He has previously made 230 appearances for Atletico Madrid and scored 100 goals for the club before moving to Manchester in 2011. He has also won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup with the Madrid-based club.

Barcelona is also closing in on the signing of Lyon forward Memphis Depay on a free transfer. Depay has confirmed interest from the Spanish club. He has been linked heavily with a move to the Catalan club since last summer. Along with Depay and Aguero, Eric Garcia will join Barcelona from Manchester City on a free transfer. With the club riddled with debt, free transfers will be the way to go for Barcelona this summer.
