India’s table tennis landscape has witnessed a transformative shift with the emergence of Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT).
The league has played a pivotal role in elevating the sport’s profile and creating a platform for established and budding talent.
As UTT expands its footprint with two new franchises, the league is poised to solidify its position as a global leader in table tennis. Apart from the above-mentioned developments, UTT also signed extensions with Viacom18 and IndianOil.

In this exclusive interview with SportsMint Media, Mr Niraj Bajaj, Co-promoter of Ultimate Table Tennis, expanded on the league’s vision, growth strategies, and commitment to nurturing the sport at the grassroots level.
1. What is the near-term vision for UTT’s future, particularly in light of the recent expansion with two new teams?
The primary objective for UTT is to provide more opportunities for players to excel. We aim to enhance the league’s stature and are proud to say it is the world’s premier table tennis league. Our core team, including Vita Dani and myself, are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards. We prioritize delivering exceptional experiences for our players, on and off the court. While television viewership is steadily growing, we aspire to create an even more attractive proposition for sponsors and franchises.
Our ultimate goal is to foster a thriving ecosystem where stakeholders, players, sponsors, and franchises benefit. We are willing to make significant investments to achieve this, even if it means short-term financial sacrifices. Our passion for the sport and the desire to give back to the table tennis community drives our actions.
2. Given the addition of two new teams, how do you see this impacting the league’s appeal to sponsors?
Undoubtedly, the expansion will result in increased match coverage and greater visibility, both of which are highly attractive to sponsors. While sponsors are motivated by a genuine passion for the sport, they also seek a strong return on investment. The growing television viewership, projected to surpass 50-60 million, presents a compelling opportunity for sponsors to reach a vast audience.
Similarly, the expansion benefits franchises by creating a more competitive landscape and increasing the league’s overall value. Our focus remains on ensuring the well-being of all stakeholders, and we are committed to contributing to the league’s growth even if it requires financial sacrifices.
3. Drawing from your experience in the Bajaj Group; how have you applied your business acumen to UTT?
While business acumen is essential, my passion for the sport has been the primary driving force behind my involvement in UTT. Unlike my family background, I pursued a career in sports and achieved the distinction of being an Arjuna Awardee. This unique journey has provided me with invaluable insights into the challenges and aspirations of athletes.
Our approach at UTT is to treat players like royals, fostering a sense of pride and confidence. This player-centric philosophy, combined with a strong team and a shared vision for excellence, is instrumental in shaping UTT.
4. How will the competitive nature of UTT contribute to the growth of table tennis at the grassroots level?
Competition catalyses growth in any field, and sports are no exception. The increased competition within UTT will undoubtedly inspire and motivate aspiring players. While not everyone will become a champion, participation in the sport at a young age fosters a love for the game. To sustain this growth, it is imperative to create a viable career path for players, including competitive remuneration and recognition.
Investing in coaches and providing adequate support is crucial for developing future champions. India has a rich tradition of respecting teachers, and we need to cultivate a similar culture for coaches in sports.
5. UTT has successfully attracted sponsors and broadcasters; what factors contributed to UTT’s success?
A combination of factors has contributed to UTT’s success. The sport’s inherent appeal and the league’s professionalism and sincerity have resonated with stakeholders. Overcoming initial challenges, such as securing international players and sponsors, has strengthened our resolve. The league’s reputation has grown organically, leading to increased interest from potential sponsors and franchises. We are grateful for the overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the table tennis community.
6. How does UTT align with the international table tennis calendar, particularly concerning the Olympic cycle?
Coordinating the league with the international table tennis calendar is essential to ensure player availability. Given the logistical challenges and recovery time required after the Olympics, scheduling UTT immediately post-Olympics is impractical. We work closely with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to identify suitable windows for the league. The federation has admired Ultimate Table Tennis and officially included it in the international calendar.
