Everything to know about SAFF Championship 2023

India is the defending champion, having won their eighth championship by overcoming Nepal in the final in 2021.

The biennial international men’s football championship of South Asia, organised by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), the SAFF Championship is all set to begin its 14th edition tomorrow i.e. June 21 and will run until July 4, 2023, at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore, India.

India is the defending champion, having won their eighth championship by overcoming Nepal in the final in 2021.

The structure calls for eight teams to be divided into two groups of four for the first time in years. Group A includes hosts India, Pakistan, Kuwait, and Nepal, whereas, on the other hand, Group B includes Lebanon, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Bhutan. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the knockouts. The knockouts include two semifinals and the final.

In the first semi-final, the Group A winner will face the Group B runner-up, while in the other semi-final match, the Group B leader will confront the Group A runner-up. The SAFF Championship 2023 final will take place on July 4 between the winners of the two semifinal matches.

The Indian football team has been the most accomplished side in the SAFF Championship. They have claimed the championship eight times: 1993, 1997, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2015, and 2021.
