Edwin Vanspaul extends contract with Chennaiyin FC

Chennaiyin FC confirmed on Thursday that Tamil Nadu footballer Edwin Sydney Vanspaul has renewed his contract with the club. His contract was set to expire next month. Vanspaul insisted that he is eager to keep delivering good performances for the franchise in Indian Super League (ISL).

“I am proud of everything I have gained in these two years so far at CFC. It is certainly a matter of huge importance for me to continue representing a two-time champion club of the ISL. The endeavour now is to keep improving and delivering more success hopefully to the club and our fans”.

Vanspaul joined the CFC ahead of the 2019-20 Indian Super League campaign from the I-league club Chennai City FC. In his debut season, played a starring role in defense as a right-back. He also operated as a defensive midfielder. Despite having a limited role in the 2020-21 season, Edwin whenever called upon performed exceptionally well, assisting twice in 14 matches.

Chennaiyin FC finished eighth with just 20 points in 20 matches in the ISL last season. He was part of Chennai City FC’s title-winning season of 2018–19. The Chennai-based franchise went on to represent India in the AFC Champions League playoffs and AFC Cup.

CFC started their ISL 2020-21 campaign under new coach Csaba Laszlo with a win as they defeated Jamshedpur FC 2-1 in their opening game. However, the team couldn’t maintain momentum as they failed to register a single game as hosts.

The two times ISL champions will be looking to bolster their squad for the upcoming season of the ISL. Both attack and defence need massive improvement as they only scored seventeen and conceded 23 last season. The team also needs to find a stable system that gets the best out of all players. In search of balance last season, CFC switched from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 attacking and back to 4-2-3-1.
