India extended their unbeaten run in the Asia Cup 2025 with a 21-run victory over Oman in the final Group A fixture at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, a match that carried more symbolic resonance than qualification stakes.

Already assured of a place in the Super Four, India chose to bat first and compiled 188 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. Sanju Samson provided the backbone of the innings with a measured 56 from 45 deliveries, an effort that later earned him the Man of the Match award. He was ably supported by Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 38 off 15 balls, Axar Patel’s 26 from 13, and Tilak Varma’s brisk 29 from 18. Oman’s bowlers, particularly, Shah Faisal who returned figures of 2 for 23, kept the innings in check to prevent India from posting an even larger total.

Oman responded with grit and composure in the chase. Veteran opener Aamir Kaleem led the way with a fine 64 from 46 deliveries, while Hammad Mirza added a fluent 51 to keep their side in the contest. For long stretches of the innings, Oman’s disciplined batting gave hope of a potential upset, but India’s bowlers tightened their lines in the closing overs. Hardik Pandya’s economical 1 for 26 helped restrict Oman to 167 for 4, leaving them short despite a spirited effort.

The victory confirmed India’s position at the top of Group A with three wins from three matches. Oman, meanwhile, bowed out of the tournament without a win but with considerable credit for their competitive display against one of the game’s giants.

The match carried additional significance for India as left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh became the first Indian bowler to reach 100 wickets in T20 internationals.

It was also a landmark occasion for Oman, marking their first official T20 international meeting with India. While the result followed expectation, Oman’s showing underlined the progress of their cricketing programme, while India used the opportunity to test depth before facing tougher opponents.

India will meet Pakistan in their opening Super Four fixture on September 21, a clash set to renew one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries.

Scorecard:

India: 188-8 Overs 20, Sanju Samson 56, Shah Faisal 2/23

Oman: 167-4 , Overs 20, Aamir Kaleem 64, Hardik Pandya 1/26
