Diego Simeone signs contract extension with Atletico Madrid up to 2024

Simeone has been a part of the club since 2011 and won numerous titles with the club which includes La Liga, Copa Del Rey and UEFA Europa League.

Spanish champions Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has signed a new deal with the club that keeps him for three more years until 2024.

Along with Simeone, other coaching staff members which include Oscar Ortega, Pablo Vercellone, Nelson Vivas and Herman Bonvinvini have also signed a three-year deal with the club.

Simeone was roped in by the club in 2011 and since then he has got many accolades to his name as a manager which includes winning the La Liga and UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup twice. He also helped his side to win the Copa Del Rey in 2013. However, his side were also the runners up in UEFA Champions League in the 2013-14 and 2015-16 season.

This season, he helped his side to claim the 11th La Liga title in May and finished the season with 86 points two points more than previous champions Real Madrid. This was Simeone’s second La Liga title in 11 years at the club.

Before signing for Atletico, the 51-year-old had a managed River Plate in his native country of Argentina between 2007-2008 and also managed Racing Club in 2011. The Argentinian also coached the Italian side, Catania, in 2011 who currently plays in the third tier in Italy.

Simeone made an instant impact when he first signed for Atletico Madrid as a manager. He managed his side to clinch the Europa League in his very first season in charge in 2011 by defeating the Spanish side Athletic Bilbao 3-0.

He is also the club’s most successful manager with eight trophies to his name and also has the most wins in the club’s history with 316. Simeone is also one of the very few managers who tasted success as a player and then as a manager. He has also played for Atletico Madrid and won the La Liga and Copa Del Rey title with Colchoneros.

This will be a fresh challenge for Simeone as his team needs to defend their La Liga title against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Atletico officially announced the signing of 20-year-old Brazilian forward Marcos Paulo from Brazilian side Fluminense. According to reports, the club has also signed Argentinian midfielder Rodrigo De Paul from the Italian side Udinese and an official announcement will be made soon.

Atletico will begin their title defence for the 2021-22 season against Celta Vigo on 15th August.
