DAZN still aims for Premier League rights

Soccer has been the focal point in DAZN's strategy

DAZN is reportedly still opting for the Premier League rights and might make a major acquisition to get them.

I would love to see the Premier League on DAZN,” executive chairman Kevin Mayer said at Wednesday’s Royal Television Society convention. “It’s a huge market, incredibly popular sport, high-quality experience, of course, we’d want that.”

The latest bidding round for the United Kingdom’s top-flight soccer league, which concluded recently saw Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport, and Amazon renew their deals with the Premier League successfully. DAZN missed out on the bidding and agreements were extended with the same platforms for $7 billion till 2025.

DAZN has shown that its focal point has always been soccer. The company announced in July that a five-year deal was agreed to broadcast the UEFA Women’s Champions League in partnership with YouTube.

The British OTT platform holds the rights to Serie A in Italy and reportedly rejected a $1.83 billion offer from Sky to partner those rights in June.

The platform also streams Bundesliga through a sub-licensing contract with Discovery from August 2020.

DAZN still has an opportunity to seize Premier League rights through BT Sport. It was reported that BT was discovering a sale of its sports broadcasting side in April, with DAZN, Disney, and Amazon all involved. Mayer announced that buying BT Sport is still an option.

Though, it does not look like he is interested in U.S. businesses. “I don’t think it would be smart for DAZN to have a real focus on the U.S.,” said Mayer. “It’s an ultra-competitive market. We’re going to take a pretty light approach to the U.S.”
