In a move that reimagines how live sport reaches audiences, DAZN and TikTok have delivered a watershed moment for English football. Last weekend, the National League fixture between Southend United and Carlisle United was streamed live and free to a global audience on TikTok LIVE, the first time the league’s action has been broadcast at this scale on a social media platform.

The initiative marked a bold step beyond the traditional subscription and broadcast ecosystem, targeting digital-native, mobile-first fans who consume sport through short-form and interactive formats. It reflects how football’s media model is evolving, from television exclusivity to algorithmic accessibility.

The broadcast followed DAZN’s long-term rights deal with the National League, which runs through 2030–31. But this activation represented something more disruptive: a strategic trial of free, social-first distribution in partnership with a platform that already commands vast engagement.

As part of the wider collaboration, DAZN and TikTok have also launched a content development programme for all 72 National League clubs. This includes workshops on storytelling, live content creation, and digital engagement, enabling clubs to move from community-focused institutions to globally discoverable sports brands.

Pete Oliver, CEO of Growth Markets at DAZN, said, “DAZN is the home of the National League, and on announcing the latest initiative. This collaboration with TikTok is an important moment in DAZN’s longstanding partnership with the National League.

“Through broadcasting National League content on DAZN’s dedicated TikTok channel and hosting a workshop on leveraging the platform, we’re working with clubs to grow their engagement, tell their stories, and reach wider audiences. DAZN is helping make football more accessible and creating opportunities for clubs to thrive in the digital era.”

Phil Alexander, CEO of the National League, added, “Our partnership with DAZN and TikTok brings clubs closer to their communities and helps shine a spotlight on the National League at a crucial moment.

“By making National League football available live and free on DAZN’s TikTok channel, we’re giving fans everywhere the chance to connect with the game they love, while building momentum for the 3UP campaign.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to amplify our voice, as well as that of the clubs, players, MPs, the Football Supporters Association, and fans that are calling for change.”

Abbie Raybould, Sports Lead at TikTok UK, continued, “Football is at the heart of TikTok’s global community; it’s the number one sport our users follow, watch, and play.

“Collaborating with DAZN to bring the National League to TikTok LIVE is a big step towards making football more accessible, immersive, and interactive – championing the community spirit that underpins the national game. TikTok is a platform that celebrates authentic, local stories, and this collaboration will bring fans closer to their favourite clubs.”

This collaboration also fits into a much larger global playbook. TikTok’s sports portfolio continues to grow: its partnerships with LALIGA, Juventus Women (through TikTok Italia), the Saudi Pro League, and the International Paralympic Committee have cemented the platform as a major player in sports engagement. TikTok has also teamed up with DAZN for global fan activations for the recently concluded FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

Meanwhile, DAZN’s football footprint spans continents. It holds exclusive LALIGA rights across key European markets, delivers Bundesliga coverage in Japan, and broadcasts Lega Serie A in multiple territories. Recent partnerships, including its alliance with Fubo in Canada and a global deal with FIFA to enhance fan experience, highlight DAZN’s ambition to dominate digital football consumption.

The Southend–Carlisle fixture may have lasted 90 minutes, but its implications will echo far longer. It was not just another match; it was a signal that the platform is becoming as important as the rights. By merging sports’ local emotion with global accessibility, DAZN and TikTok are reshaping how fans everywhere experience the game, one scroll, one stream, one story at a time.
