Ahead of the sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), Indian entrepreneurs Saranyan Palaniswamy and K.C. Shyam Kangayan have acquired the Colombo franchise, officially rebranding the team as Colombo Kaps.

The acquisition, made through their consortium Witness Sports Alliance LLC, brings a wealth of experience from India’s regional T20 leagues. Palaniswamy is a seasoned business leader and sports investor, while Kangayan previously served as CEO and Executive Director of Ruby Trichy Warriors in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). The duo also co-owns Ruby White Town Legends in the Pondicherry Premier League (PPL), reinforcing their strong presence in India’s domestic T20 ecosystem.

Commenting on the occasion, Samantha Dodanwela, Director of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), said, “We are delighted to welcome Witness Sports Alliance LLC to the Lanka Premier League family. Their entry reaffirms the LPL’s position as a competitive and commercially attractive league that continues to bring together global investors and top cricketing talent. With the Colombo Kaps, we look forward to a new chapter of growth and innovation for the league.”

Saranyan Palaniswamy and K.C. Shyam Kangayan, Directors of Witness Sports Alliance LLC, added, “It’s an exciting time to be part of Sri Lankan cricket. “The Lanka Premier League has emerged as a vibrant platform that connects regional cricketing talent with global audiences. Through the Colombo Kaps, our goal is to contribute to the league’s long-term success by building a competitive, fan-focused, and professionally managed franchise.”

The upcoming 2025 LPL season marks a historic moment, as Indian players will participate for the first time, following the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) long-standing restriction on its players featuring in foreign leagues. The tournament is scheduled from December 1 to December 23, 2025, with matches set across three iconic venues: R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Colombo Kaps are expected to unveil their new logo, team jersey, and key player signings in the coming weeks, setting the stage for what promises to be the most exciting season in LPL history.

With a clear focus on strategic leadership, performance, and fan engagement, the newly branded Colombo Kaps aim to make an immediate impact on the league while enhancing the LPL’s international profile.
