The Chicago Bulls have strengthened their long-term ownership and commercial outlook after announcing that billionaire philanthropists Lukas and Samantha Walton have acquired a minority stake in both the NBA franchise and the United Centre, further reinforcing the vision behind the landmark US$7 billion 1901 Project redevelopment in Chicago.
The investment was completed through the purchase of equity from existing limited partners, with financial terms of the transaction remaining undisclosed. The deal does not impact the club’s governance structure, with the Reinsdorf family retaining controlling ownership of the Bulls, while the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families continue as the controlling owners of the United Centre and its surrounding real estate developments.
The addition of the Waltons, whose investment portfolio spans sustainability, healthcare and technology, represents a significant endorsement of the Bulls’ long-term growth strategy and the ongoing transformation of Chicago’s West Side into a premier sports, entertainment and mixed-use destination.
Michael Reinsdorf, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Bulls, said, “We are pleased to welcome Lukas and Samantha, who share our deep-seated belief in Chicago and our commitment to the institutions that make this city strong. Together with our partners at the United Centre, the Wirtz family, we are fully aligned in our vision for the Bulls, the United Centre campus, and the future of the West Side.”
Lukas and Samantha Walton also expressed their enthusiasm for the partnership and the investment in Chicago’s West Side and added, “The Chicago Bulls are as iconic as the city itself, and this transaction reflects our dedication to the city’s future. We have long admired the vision the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families have set forth for The 1901 Project, and we look forward to the United Centre’s continued positive impact on Chicago’s West Side.”
Danny Wirtz, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Blackhawks and Wirtz Corporation, added, “Our families have had the great pleasure of partnering in the development of the United Centre over the last 30 years, and we look forward to a bright future ahead.”
The Walton family’s investment comes at a pivotal stage for the 1901 Project, a privately funded redevelopment expected to transform approximately 55 acres surrounding the United Centre into a vibrant mixed-use district featuring residential communities, hotels, retail, entertainment venues, public parks and enhanced community spaces. Valued at approximately US$7 billion, the initiative is among the largest sports-led urban regeneration projects currently underway in North America.
Beyond strengthening the Bulls’ ownership group, the transaction reflects a broader trend of ultra-high-net-worth investors acquiring minority stakes in premium sports franchises while increasingly viewing adjacent real estate developments as critical long-term value drivers. For the Bulls, the addition of Lukas and Samantha Walton provides another influential strategic partner as the organisation continues to expand the United Centre’s role beyond game days and accelerate its vision for Chicago’s evolving sports and entertainment ecosystem.
