Channel 4 bags media rights of FIFA Club World Cup 2021

The media unit will also air the live coverage of Chelsea’s semi-final match on February 9, 2022, on its subsidiary channel E4 at 4 pm GMT.

The UK-based broadcaster, Channel 4 has teamed up with FIFA to acquire the media rights of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2021. Through this association, Channel 4 will cover the finals of the thrilling tournament only if the football club, Chelsea, competes in it.

The United Kingdom fans can catch the live-action of the finals if Chelsea reaches up to the final stage of the competition after winning the semifinals. The local broadcasting network has bagged the terrestrial television rights of the iconic tournament and will air the finals on its channel on February 12, 2022, at 4 PM GMT. Through this acquisition, the channel will also showcase the exclusive highlights of the finals on the same day to cater to the football fans that miss the broadcast.

Channel 4’s Head of Sport, Pete Andrews, commented on this deal and said, “This is one of the few major honours to have eluded Chelsea so it’d be great if they can make history live on Channel 4. We’re delighted to be bringing top-flight football live on free to air terrestrial television, let’s just hope The Blues can go all the way.”

If Chelsea wins the tournament for the first time in its history, then it will join the likes of BarcelonaBayern MunichManchester UnitedLiverpool and Real Madrid that have won it previously.

Channel 4 has recently carried out some strong commercial moves to gain significant recognition in the sports media industry. In the previous month, the brand partnered with the electric motorsport organization, Formula E to become the official free-to-air TV home for its eighth season. 

The network also aired the iconic Formula 1 finale in association with Sky Sports and also witnessed a massive viewership response.
