CBC secures broadcasting rights for CWG 2022

The coverage by the broadcaster would include 10 hours of live-action as included in the CBC Sports programming on the original CBC TV channel.

CBC Sports, the sports division of the Canadian public service network, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has acquired the rights for the Commonwealth Games 2022, which be conducted in Birmingham, UK.

The coverage by the broadcaster would include 10 hours of live-action as included in the CBC Sports programming on the original CBC TV channel, alongside having six daily streaming feeds of the event available on both mobile and digitally. CBC Sports’ digital and social media handles would provide minute-to-minute updates of the event.

Previously, CBC had covered the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, after securing a deal with DAZN, the OTT platform which initially acquired the streaming rights for the 2028 edition. CBC had also aired the CWG consecutively from 1954 British Empire till CWG in Vancouver. Earlier in April, the CBC had extended the long-term Olympic Games rights agreement to cover 2026, 2028, 2030, and the 2032 games.

The CWG 2022 will be held from July 28 to August 8 and the Canadian contingent will consist of 200 athletes, coaches, and staff, with 275 athletes competing in 18 sports and five para-sports.

CBC would cover the two summers (2028, 2032) and two winters (2026, 2030) of Olympic Competitions as Vancouver is one of the probable hosts for the 2030 season.

The broadcasting rights cover all the media platforms, including both Linear and Digital TV. The CBC/Radio-Canada agreement would cover at least 200 hours of each summer game and 100 hours of each winter game on public service TV. As CBC has secured rights for the Paris 2024 summer games, this deal ensures that the broadcaster has rights for the next five Olympic Games.

Chris Wilson, Executive Director of Sports and Olympics at CBC, said, “Building on the momentum of Canada’s stellar performance at Tokyo 2020, we’re excited to bring audiences across the country the top moments from Team Canada at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Canadians will have the opportunity to cheer for the country’s best athletes and teams across our platforms, and follow all of the action …”

Scott Stevenson, Team Canada 2022’s Executive Director, added, “We are thrilled that for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, thanks to CBC Sports, fans and supporters of Canada’s best high-performance athletes, will have extensive opportunities to watch and cheer Team Canada 2022 on as they go for gold.”
