Bruce Carnegie-Brown named as new MCC chairman

British Business Tycoon Bruce Carnegie-Brown will become the sixth Chairman of Marylebone Cricket Club. Carnegie-Brown is also Chairperson of Lloyd of London and Vice-Chairman of Banco Santander. The British businessman will be the successor of Gerald Corbett, current MCC Chairman. Gerald Corbett will end his six-year tenure on September 30, 2021. Carnegie-Brown’s appointment is subject to the approval of other members during the 2021 Annual General Meeting of the club.

Brown has been a permanent member of MCC since 1997 and part of the finance committee of the club since last year. He also been associated with JP Morgan and Bank of America as a board member.

Bruce Carnegie-Brown is delighted with this development. He said, “It is a huge privilege to be proposed to members as the next club chairman. Our club has proven to be very resilient and is well placed for the return of members and visitors to Lord’s as soon as this is permitted. I look forward to meeting members of the club and earning their trust and support.”

MCC’s current incumbent, Gerald Corbett said, “I think Bruce will be a fantastic chairman and I’m looking forward to working closely with him to ensure an orderly handover at the end of the committee year in September.”

Although, Carnegie-Brown would be taking over the chair in a tricky situation when MCC’s Lord’s Cricket Stadium is spending millions on the refurbishment of the Compton and Edrich Stands during the pandemic era. Because of the current pandemic situation, MCC is already in debt of £30 million.

The club has not been able to host much cricket since the global shutdown. The only match played at Lord’s since March 2020 was the Final of Bob Wills Trophy. Marylebone Cricket Club have also been thinking of offering 350 life memberships to members of the public who been waiting for two decades to make-up for the losses.
