The Bengal Super League will make its long-awaited debut on 7 December 2025, with Zee Bangla Sonar securing exclusive television rights and all fixtures set to stream live on ZEE5. Developed jointly by the Indian Football Association and Shrachi Sports, the new franchise-based league is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious regional football projects in India.
For Zee Bangla Sonar, a channel built as a hybrid sports and entertainment destination for Bengali-speaking audiences, the partnership serves as a strategic expansion into live regional sports. Broadcast slots have been fixed at 1 PM and 4 PM, aiming to capture both weekend and weekday viewership across West Bengal.
Shrachi Sports Managing Director Rahul Todi said, “The Bengal Super League celebrates Bengal’s deep-rooted love for football. Our partnership with Zee Bangla Sonar and ZEE5 ensures the excitement of the stadium reaches millions of homes. We aim to redefine how regional sports are viewed and celebrated.”
ZEEL Chief Cluster Officer – East, North, and Premium Cluster Samrat Ghosh added, “Zee Bangla Sonar is designed to cater to diverse audiences with unique content. Broadcasting BSL matches aligns perfectly with our vision, allowing fans across West Bengal and beyond to experience the vibe, vigour and vibrancy of the league.”
The inaugural edition will feature eight franchise teams built around district clusters, with matches distributed across four district venues. This deliberate move away from a Kolkata-centric model is aimed at spreading professional football deeper into Bengal’s grassroots. Each team will feature a 25-player roster with a mix of young emerging talent and experienced state-level players.
The league has also secured a compelling international highlight by appointing German World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus as its official ambassador. His presence adds instant global recognition and bolsters the commercial appeal of a league rooted in regional identity.
For Zee Entertainment Enterprises, the deal reinforces its expanding sports rights strategy. The network has recently added properties such as DP World ILT20 Season 4 and Baseball United, positioning itself as a growing player in India’s non-cricket sports ecosystem.
For Shrachi Sports and the IFA, the broadcast partnership delivers both statewide reach and national OTT visibility. This ensures the league enters its debut season with the distribution strength required to build a long-term fan base.
Organisers have framed the BSL as more than just a tournament. The competition is expected to influence talent development across the state, create new hyper-local rivalries, and boost the pipeline feeding into national leagues like the I-League and Indian Super League.
The first season will double as a market test for the viability of a professionally produced regional football league. Key metrics such as attendance, viewership, sponsor engagement, and production quality will determine its long-term trajectory.
With Bengal preparing for kick-off in December, the Bengal Super League is positioned to deliver a fresh, district-driven football spectacle backed by a powerful broadcast platform, setting the tone for a new era in regional Indian football.
