BCCI: Important things on agenda in Special General Meeting

Keeping in view the two major events that India had scheduled to host in the ongoing year amidst the deadly wave of COVID-19, a Special General Meeting will be held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on May 29, two days prior to the executive board meeting held by ICC.

In the SGM, BCCI will address two main concerns for the season – Resumption of IPL 2021 and fate of T-20 World Cup 2021 in India – which will be held under the presence of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

With the pandemic affecting the sporting community altogether in the world, its impact was largely felt especially in India, when IPL 2021 was suspended at the start of May due to covid cases in the bio bubbles of four teams. Having hosted 29 matches for this year, IPL 2021 has been postponed indefinitely. Along with IPL 2021, there also emerge signs of the upcoming T20 World Cup in India also having the same fate.

In order to get to a conclusion and adjust to their bust calendar, BCCI will be making decisions on the following agendas in the Special General Meeting hosted on Saturday, May 29:

IPL 2021 Phase-2

According to various reports, BCCI is almost certain to carry out phase-2 on IPL 2021 in UAE during September and October. A number of things including the schedule, logistics, availability of overseas players, stay arrangement among others are expected to be finalized in the meeting.

ICC T20 World Cup Venue

Although the cricket fraternity seems convinced about the change in the venue for the T20 World Cup a prerequisite, BCCI is believed to be confident about hosting the tournament in India, with a firm conviction of the situation being alleviated by that time. However, considering the current situation of India where the daily cases cross over 100k, ICC is likely to ask the board to organize the tournament elsewhere, with UAE as the most preferable back option. BCCI will have to work around this situation to come up with a solution during this meeting.
