The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Rohit Sharma as the new Test captain. The Indian cricket governing body unveiled the big news while announcing the squad for the bilateral series against Sri Lanka, which is starting from February 24.

The upcoming series against Sri Lanka consists of three T20Is and two Tests. The first fixture of the longest format will be played on March 1 and that will be the Indian opener’s first assignment as the Test captain.

Jasprit Bumrah has been named as the vice-captain for the Sri Lanka series in the absence of KL Rahul. The Indian team’s veteran cricketers Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara failed to make it into the Test squad against Sri Lanka.

The 34-year-old cricketer has played 43 Tests so far and has gathered 3047 runs. The Mumbai Indians‘ skipper wasn’t a regular pick in India’s Test squad until he started opening. Rohit has an impressive average of 58.48 as an opener in the longest format. In addition, the right-handed batsman has eight centuries and 14 half-centuries in Tests.
