The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Shubman Gill, the 25-year-old, as the next captain of India’s Test team.

The development, which was issued by head selector Ajit Agarkar, coincides with the publication of a revamped team for the forthcoming five-match Test series against England, which begins June 20.

Gill takes over as India begins a new chapter, following the retirements of mainstays Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format. Not since Kohli’s advancement in 2014 has Indian Test cricket had such a substantial leadership change.

Gill, regarded as the logical successor, has already demonstrated leadership potential by leading India in T20Is and captaining Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). GT have performed admirably under his leadership this season, and they are now topping the rankings. While the demands of IPL and Test cricket are significantly different, Gill’s calmness, maturity, and tactical clarity have garnered considerable praise.

Gill has played 32 Tests since making his debut in Australia during the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, accumulating 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05, including five hundreds. His strong technique and attitude place him as a pillar for India’s future.

The England tour also marks the start of India’s ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 season. The five Tests will take place between June and August at iconic grounds including Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.

This series is more than simply a tour; it reflects the symbolic passing of the torch. With legends behind him and a bright future ahead, Shubman Gill enters the spotlight, heralding in a new era of Indian Test cricket.
