In the first Test match of the two-match series, India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai.
After putting into bat, the Indian batters faced difficulties with the new ball as wickets kept falling from one end. Yashasvi Jaiswal (56) was the only top-order batter to stand firm on the crease. The southpaw batter’s solid half-century, combined with Rishabh Pant‘s good knock, helped the team out of difficulty. When the red cherry faded, the batting became much easier, with Ravindra Jadeja (86) and Ravichandran Ashwin (113), the fearsome combo, putting India back in a commanding position once again. While Jadeja did not attain his milestone, Ashwin did with 11 fours and two sixes. The later batter was fairly confident in his strokeplay and was well assisted by Jadeja when it came to running between the wickets. The side scored 376/10.
With the ball for the visitors, Hasan Mahmud secured a fifer, while Taskin Ahmed claimed three wickets. One wicket each was also grabbed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nahid Rana.
Talking about Bangladesh’s batting, there were less to no positives as only Shakib Al Hassan (32) managed to reach 30’s mark. The team was bundled for just 149 runs because they were unable to withstand the wrath of the new ball.
Jasprit Bumrah was the star performer with the ball for India in the first inning. The yorker specialist got four wickets, while the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Jadeja got two wickets each.
When India came on to bat for the second time, it was Shubman Gill (119*), who steered the wheel for the home team. Gill hammered a century, which included 10 fours and four sixes. Along with him, Rishabh Pant (109) also clinched his ton. The southpaw batter had 13 fours and four sixes to his name. Such knocks helped India add 288/4d runs.
Mehidy was the top performer for Bangladesh with the ball in the second innings as he took two wickets. One each was also grabbed by Taskin Ahmed and Nanid Rana.
Bangladesh scored 234/10 runs in the second innings, which was a respectable effort considering their first-innings performance. Nevertheless, the team failed miserably to reach its target as no batter was able to perform their skill. Among batters, only Najmul Hossain Shanto (82) hit a fifty. The other highest scorers were Sadman Islam (35), Zakir Hasan (33), and him.
After being wicketless in the first inning, Ashwin bagged six wickets in the second one. Ravindra Jadeja also grabbed three wickets, while Bumrah got one.
With this result, India won the game by a huge 280 runs. Also, for the first time in history, India have more wins than losses in Test cricket.
