Australia vs India: KL Rahul set to be sidelined due to wrist injury

Indian batsman KL Rahul has been ruled out for the remaining matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after he sprained his left wrist during a practice session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Since his full recovery will take at least three weeks, Rahul is returning to India for rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in  Bengaluru.

Although Rahul did not play in the first two Tests of the tournament, his chances to feature in the Sydney Test were high given Mayank Agarwal’s poor run at the top in Adelaide and Melbourne. Rahul has not been a part of test squad since the last tour of Australia. However, his good form in white ball cricket did force selection committee’s hand to select him for this tour.

This injury is a big setback for Rahul since there was a good chance to cement his place in the team. It remains to be seen whether he will be fit for the start of India’s four-match Test series against England, which is scheduled to begin on February 5 in Chennai.

This news added to India’s growing list of injury woes as fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav are already out of action due to an arm fracture and a strained calf muscle, respectively. Ishant Sharma was already ruled out of the tour due to an abdominal muscle injury. The team is also missing the services of regular skipper Virat Kohli, who is away on paternity leave.

On the upside, Rohit Sharma is back in the squad after completing his quarantine period. He has been named deputy to stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane. The four-match series is currently tied at 1-1, setting up an eye-watering clash in Sydney this week.
