Australia Football League inks sponsorship deal with Crypto.com

This will be Crypto.com's first sponsorship with any Australian sport.

The Australia Football League (AFL) has signed its first major cryptocurrency sports sponsorship agreement with Crypto.com to support its women’s league (AFLW).

The agreement is worth nearly $75 million over the next five years which is a noteworthy increase from the AFL’s current $18.5 million sponsorship contract with Toyota. Crypto.com is a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange that delivers digital wallets and cryptocurrency-backed debit cards. This will be Crypto.com’s first sponsorship with any Australian sport.

AFL Executive General Manager Customer and Commercial, Kylie Rogers said, “The AFL is proud to be the first Australian sports league and elite women’s competition globally to work alongside an organization that shares our passion to progress the future of elite sport and technology.”

According to Crypto.com General Manager, Asia & Pacific, Karl Mohan, the company was drawn to Australia due to the relatively high number of women interested in cryptocurrency.

He said, “Our latest consumer research in Australia found that more than half (53%) of crypto investors were females.

“It is very encouraging to see that Australians from all walks of life, irrespective of gender or background, are very keen to adopt cryptocurrencies, and we’re excited about being their go-to platform.”

According to a survey released last year, women are still less than half as likely as men to invest in cryptocurrencies, with 16% of men investing compared to 7% of women.

Over the last few months, Crypto.com has amassed several sports branding deals totalling more than $1.5 billion. The crypto company secured a $700 million deal in mid-November to rename Los Angeles’ Staples Center the Crypto.com Arena for the next 20 years.
