The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 cricket final delivered a high-stakes, high-intensity clash as India defended their gold medal in Nisshin, Japan, holding off arch-rivals Pakistan by 19 runs.

India’s batting performance was characterised by a dynamic powerplay beginning, succeeded by an important late-overs surge. Opener Abhishek Sharma (61) established the tempo quickly, scoring a fifty in just 24 balls, which included three fours and seven sixes. Following a short dry spell in the middle overs during which Ishan Kishan (20) and captain Shreyas Iyer (21) were dismissed by Pakistan’s slow left-arm spin, Tilak Varma (51*) steadied the attack in the death overs, at a strike rate of 231.82, while Shivam Dube (27) added late power with a brisk cameo, helping India exceed the 200-run threshold.

Chasing a target of 212 for gold, Pakistan’s attempt was largely driven by Hasan Nawaz (96), who had an impressive outing, which included five fours and seven sixes. Although Saim Ayub (29) contributed in a 50+ run stand for the third wicket, the remainder of the top order could not match the challenging required run rate. Early exits from captain Sahibzada Farhan (10) and Maaz Sadaqat (23) had Pakistan chasing the game during the middle overs. Although Nawaz scored runs, Pakistan couldn’t overcome India’s variations in the death overs, finishing their 20 overs at 192/6.

India’s bowlers remained calm under significant pressure while Pakistan were in pursuit of a high score. Washington Sundar (2/29 in 4 overs) and Axar Patel (2/29 in 4 overs) delivered vital breakthroughs during the middle overs. Shivam Dube contributed significantly with important wickets, finishing with 2/33 in his 3 overs, including the key wicket of Saim Ayub. Jasprit Bumrah didn’t take any wickets but delivered an economical spell of 0/33 in 4 overs (economy 8.25), controlling the powerplay and death overs to keep Pakistan 19 runs behind the target.

Pakistan’s bowling lineup endured early setbacks as India capitalised in the powerplay. Arafat Minhas was the standout bowler, finishing with impressive figures of 2/25 in 3 overs and dismissing both Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan to hinder India’s scoring rate. Ahmed Daniyal claimed 2/43 in 3 overs, while enigmatic spinner Abrar Ahmed was economical (1/29 in 4 overs).

With this victory, the Men in Blue have clinched the gold medal, taking India’s gold medal tally to 19.

Scorecard:

India: 211/6, Overs 20, Abhishek Sharma 61, Arafat Minhas 2/25

Pakistan: 192/6, Overs 20, Hasan Nawaz 96, Washington Sundar 2/29
