ARD and ZDF secure broadcasting rights to DFB Cup

The rights auction were held back in April when the DFL offered packages in the broadcasting rights which were landed by SportsA which is the rights buying agency for ARD and ZDF.

Germany’s regional public service broadcaster ARD and German public-service television broadcaster ZDF announced on Wednesday that the German domestic football cup also known as the DFB Pokal will be streaming on their platforms for the next four years.

The DFB Pokal, being the major domestic cup of the German Top flight which sees German clubs from every division compete for the trophy is a tournament sought after by the biggest clubs in Germany that include Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, BVB and many more.

Borussia Dortmund won the latest edition of the DFB pokal which saw beat, RB Leipzig, in 2021 final by a huge margin of 4-1 and they lifted the coveted trophy in all its might.

Total seven rights packages were offered the first two of those were taken by ARD and ZDF with the others being sold as well.
The deal with ARD runs until the 2022 season that is reportedly worth over $53 million per year.

The DFB Pokal has been recording massive viewership in Germany with 14.27 million watching the final between Bayern Munich and Bayern Leverkusen in 2020 which saw Bayern Munich win the title.

With the start of the new season, all the clubs will start again on their journey to compete for the Domestic Cup with many such as Bayern Munich, BVB and RB Leipzig being the favourites to lift the title.
