Antoine Griezmann returns to Atletico Madrid

Griezmann scored 22 goals in 74 league matches for Barcelona.

In the transfer window, which closed today, Antoine Griezmann made a last moment return to his old club Atletico Madrid from FC Barcelona on loan with an option to buy for 40 million euros ($47.2 million).

Antoine has rejoined Atletico on a one-year loan contract with an option to extend by another year and will be looking forward to playing along with the ex-Barcelona striker Luis Suarez.

Barcelona has been struggling financially, with a lot of players taking pay cuts just to make way for new superstars to enter the club. The club even had to let their legend Lionel Messi leave for Paris Saint-Germain followed by Antoine now.

Barcelona signed Griezmann a few years back for 120m euros and was one of the highest-paid players in Barcelona. To lay off the financial burden, he has been loaned back to Atletico where they will pay the player’s wages.

Barcelona has confirmed that the deal includes a compulsory permanent transfer clause when his loan finishes.

FC Barcelona would like to thank Antoine Griezmann for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future,” said the Catalan club.

FC Barcelona has signed Sevilla striker Luuk de Jong as a replacement for Griezmann but the Dutch striker who has scored only 10 goals in two seasons will be difficult to depend on his consistency.

Griezmann had scored 133 goals across 257 appearances for Atletico Madrid and back then was hailed as one of the top strikers around the globe. He will surely look forward to bring his old form back along with the memories but doing so will surely be difficult as he will be competing with Suarez, Joao Felix and Angel Correa.

With the addition of Griezmann to their squad depth, Atletico has just become stronger and will be looking forward to defending their La Liga crown and finally win the Champions League.
