The English football club, Salford City FC, have announced a landmark partnership with the American International Group (AIG), marking the first time a Fortune 500 company has taken an equity stake in an EFL League Two club.

Under the agreement, AIG becomes both a minority shareholder and the club’s global commercial partner — a move poised to reshape Salford’s growth trajectory on and off the pitch.

The partnership will see AIG inject strategic investment into Salford City’s long-term development plans, focusing on three key areas: upgrading the Peninsula Stadium, expanding digital fan engagement, and deepening community outreach programmes across Greater Manchester.

Peter Zaffino, Chairman and CEO of AIG, described the deal as an opportunity to support a bold, forward-looking vision for the club and said, “AIG is proud to invest in Salford City FC and to support the Club’s multi-year strategic roadmap that will enhance the experience for players, partners and fans around the world.  We look forward to partnering with the impressive ownership group led by Gary Neville, Sir David Beckham, Declan Kelly and Lord Mervyn Davies as they execute their vision for the Club and the Salford community.”

Gary Neville, Co-Owner of Salford City, called the investment a “transformative moment” for the club and added, “We’re thrilled to welcome AIG as a strategic investor in Salford City. Their global track record of innovation and market leadership in business and sports will greatly benefit Salford City FC. AIG’s investment is a major endorsement of what we’re building, on the pitch, in the Salford community, and beyond.”

Declan Kelly, Co-Chair of Salford City, continued, “Partnering with AIG, a world-class organisation under the outstanding vision and leadership of Chairman and CEO Peter Zaffino, represents another major step forward in the evolution of Salford City FC. It proves what’s possible when global investment aligns with a football-first approach. AIG is committed to helping Salford achieve its vision of becoming the best small club in the world, and its investment, both financially and strategically, will help accelerate our next phase of progress.”

AIG’s arrival adds to a growing roster of high-profile partners at Salford City, including Indian sports travel and experiences brand DreamSetGo, and a recently signed multi-year deal with Coca-Cola. The club now boasts the most dynamic commercial pipeline in its history, with the backing to fuel its ambitions for promotion and long-term sustainability.

For AIG, the move builds on its expanding sports portfolio, which already includes the title sponsorship of the AIG Women’s Open. The investment gives the insurer deeper roots in global football while connecting its brand to Salford’s rapid rise.

Beyond the capital injection, the partnership grants Salford City access to AIG’s global network, commercial expertise, and brand influence. The club believes the collaboration will strengthen its competitive position in English football while further embedding it in the local community — delivering tangible benefits on and off the pitch.
