AICF names Indorama as a co-sponsor of Indian team

This is for the first time, the Indian chess team has ever received such a support.

The All India Chess Federation (AICF) has partnered with Indorama, one of Asia’s key chemical manufacturing firms, to co-sponsor the Indian team at the 44th Chess Olympiad, which will be held in Chennai between July 28 to August 10.

This is for the first time, the Indian chess team has ever received such support, with the Tamil Nadu (TN) government granting an INR 1 crore sponsorship and co-sponsors State Bank of India as well Indorama each pledging INR 50 lakh to the team.

According to Dr Sanjay Kapoor, President of AICF, approximately 75% of the sponsorship fund would go to the players, with the remaining amount going directly into coaching camps and player kits.

The AICF has chosen a 20-member Indian team to compete in the high profile event, which will be held for the very first time in India. In both the open and women’s divisions, India will send two teams. These players recently attended their first mentorship camp in Chennai, which was conducted by Viswanathan Anand and Boris Gelfand.

AICF Secretary, Bharat Singh Chauhan, said, “We are delighted to welcome Indorama as the Indian team’s co-sponsor. Hosting the Chess Olympiad is a dream comes true moment for us and getting support from the sponsors will help us make it a memorable event. It’s great to see chess getting corporate support which will encourage and bolster the growth of the sport in India.”

Aarti Lohia, the spokesperson of Indorama, stated, “We have been supporting chess in the United Kingdom but we are Indians and want to support and promote chess in our home country. We, at Indorama, are super excited to be part of the journey of the Indian teams for the Chess Olympiad as co-sponsors. I am keen that young players benefit monetarily by playing chess as this is very essential to enhance the status of chess in India We believe this is a first step towards building a long and fruitful relationship.”

Indorama Corporation is a Singapore-based conglomerate that began as Indorama Synthetics in Indonesia in 1975. Polyethene, polypropylene, polyester fibre, Spandex filament, spun yarns, textiles, and other items are produced by the company. It is a prominent producer of polyolefins and has a presence in various countries.
